Elizabeth Menges
Embroideries
This work uses embroidery and humor to critique the traditional cultural expectations of women, such as the expectation to have a family, to be a perfect mother, to not be too sexually aggressive, and to model ‘proper’ behavior, as well as a cathartic way of confessing my own insecurities and fears about being a mother for the first time. I also used this medium to reference an era of sexism that today’s leaders are threatening to regress to, as well as to pay homage to the generations of strong women who have fought for the rights that we have today.
